Springfield, VA — Washington Gas has been selected as the Leadership Award winner in the Government category as part of the Virginia Energy Efficiency Council’s (VAEEC) 2023 Energizing Efficiency Campaign for its collaboration with Fairfax County on major energy efficient retrofit projects. The VAEEC's Energizing Efficiency Campaign is designed to showcase outstanding projects and initiatives that prioritize energy efficiency. The Fairfax County South Run and Cub Run Recreation Center projects are featured in the Government category and emphasize the collaboration between Washington Gas and Fairfax County.

The South Run and Cub Run Recreation Center projects, located in Fairfax County, represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of energy efficiency and sustainability within the community. As a key contributor to this initiative, Washington Gas has played a vital role in implementing energy efficient solutions that align with the campaign's goals.

Thanks to financial incentives from Washington Gas, Fairfax County was able to install new high-efficiency boiler equipment more cost-effectively, along with a host of other energy-saving building upgrades which will enhance the energy performance, reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The Fairfax County Park Authority made several upgrades to old boiler equipment at their Cub Run and South Run recreational facilities in Chantilly and Springfield, Virginia, and worked with Washington Gas to submit their projects to Business Energy Solutions: Virginia to receive financial incentives to help make their energy efficient upgrades more feasible. Four high efficiency large boilers exceeding a 94% thermal efficiency rate were installed at the Cub Run recreational facility and saved about 25,000 therms savings, earning $27,000 in financial incentives. Two high efficiency large boilers exceeding a 94% thermal efficiency rate were installed at the South Run recreational facility and saved about 20,000 therms savings, earning a financial incentive of $15,000.

"Being recognized by the VAEEC’s Energizing Efficiency Campaign is a testament to Washington Gas' commitment to our customers and energy efficiency," said Josh McClelland, Director of Energy Efficiency at Washington Gas. "We are proud to partner with Fairfax County and appreciate the VAEEC highlighting the results of these important projects. We hope this acknowledgement spreads awareness of the value of energy efficiency and encourages other customers to move forward with similar projects."

Washington Gas looks forward to promoting the South Run and Cub Run Recreation Center projects with other participants, industry experts, and the community as part of the VAEEC Energizing Efficiency Campaign.
